First-year students Read:
1. English proficiency tests:
On Campus |
First-year students will take an English proficiency test within the first two weeks of the first semester.
Second-year students will take the test again in the second semester. For more details, please read 校內英檢測驗。 |
Outside Campus |
The Language Center will arrange for first-year students to take CSEPT in the second semester. |
2. Make-up Courses:
In the first week of school, first-year students will take an "English proficiency test" held by the Language Center. Students of lower proficiency will be chosen to take Remedial Courses. For more information, please read 補救教學。
3. Pre-requirement:
First-year General English (English 101 and 102) are pre-requirement for Second-year English courses (English 201 and English 202). Students cannot take the latter without passing the former. For more details, read 英文課程修習。
4. Engligh Passport:
Students can apply for an English Passport at any time during a school semester. For every English activity a student attends, they can receive a stamp in the passport. Students can hand in a passport filled with stamps for extra score at the end of the semester. More information in 英文學習護照。
Questions on taking courses:
Q : Are English courses compulsory?
A : First-year and Second-year English are compulsory. Beginning in School year 2007, Third-year English will also be compulsory and will count towards graduation credits.
Q : Can I choose courses held for a different major or department?
A : Yes, as long as the courses have the exactly the same name, same amount of credits and category (Compulsory, Elective or General), and is allowed by department regulations.
Q : Is a certain level of English proficiency necessary for graduation?
A : Yes, passing a level of CEF A2 is necessary for graduation.
Questions Regarding Courses
Q : Are all English courses taught by foreign teachers?
A : Not necessarily. Foreign teachers' focus is mainly on students' listening and speaking skills, also to create a natural environment to study English.
Q : If I can't understand a thing the teacher is saying, What should I do?
A : First try to communicate to the teacher you are having difficulties in class. Also let the Language Center know. We care.

Q : Do I have to show up at class every week?
A : No. With exception of daytime students, third of the English courses are designed to be available as distance learning. The Teaching Resources Unit has more information.
Q : Is there a way I can learn extra points?
A : Yes, by participating in activities held by the Language Center, you can earn stamps that can be shown to your English teacher who will translate them into a bonus in your final score.
Q : Are there scholarships for passing English proficiency tests?
A : Yes. Students may receive scholarship for passing and obtaining a certificate of GEPT Elementary Level during the time they are a student at this school.
Q : Can students borrow books from the Language Center?
A : Yes. There are numerous books available, from novels to books for English proficiency test preparation. Students are welcome to borrow them for two weeks, with a limit of four books at the same time.
Q : If I want to prepare for an English proficiency test, does the Language Center have books that can help me prepare?
A : Yes. Please come to the Language Center to borrow them.
Q : How do I apply for and use the Online Learning Platform?
A : Your account will automatically activate when you choose an English course, with your student id as the account name. The instruction for setting the password and usage of the site are at 192.192.230.38.
English activities:
Q : What is an English Learning Passport?
A : It is a passport designed to encourage English Learning. Students wishing to apply for one must provide a one-inch photo and fill in a form at the Language Center. Creating the Passport will take 3-5 workdays.
Q : What kinds of activity are held?
A : The Language Center holds many activities and contests, ranging from speech contests to Easter-egg decoration. The English Cafe is also a good place to visit.
Q : How do I get extra score for participating in English activities?
A : Students that sign up, participate and are present for the full duration of the activities will receive one or more stamps on their English Learning Passports. The Passports can be handed in to the English teacher at the end of the semester for extra points, based on the number of stamps inside.
Q : What time does the English Cafe open?
A : Taipei Campus: Tuesdays and Wendesday 12:20~16:20. Each hour counts as a unit.
Hsinchu Campus: Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays 17:00~19:00. Each hour counts as a unit.
Classroom usage:
Q : Can students borrow the classrooms?
A : The classrooms are only for language classes. At the moment, classroom usage cannot be registered under the name of a student.
Q : What happens if I break something in the classroom?
A : You will be fined according to school regulations for damage of school property.
Q : Where can I borrow headsets?
A : At the Language Center. Fill out a form and return the headset before 4P.M. that very same day.
