What Jeans Work Best for You?

Rosario Sanguez is a fashion reporter who has been working for the CUST Magazine for over a decade. Like many people who are avidly interested in denim jeans, she loves jeans more than any other item of clothing in the world. In fact, she cannot even imagine living without denim jeans. She has had so many pairs already, but she can never seem to have enough. She is always looking for new pairs to add to her already-overflowing wardrobe. Denim jeans are exceptionally versatile from dressy to casual and easy to wear. Now there are more styles than ever before – boot-cut jeans, flared jeans, straight-cut jeans, skinny jeans, cropped jeans, wide-leg jeans, baggy jeans, low-rise jeans, you name it. Finding the perfect pair that compliments your body type can be a little difficult because what looks good on someone else may not look so good on you. Today, Rosario is going to give all the CUST readers some great tips on how to shop for jeans that flatter your figure, so that you don’t become a fashion victim at the expense of being on-trend.

Boot-cut Jeans 靴型褲
These are very versatile jeans – excellent for both formal and informal situations. They look good on everyone. They work with all shapes and sizes, and the way they slightly flare out at the bottom is very figure flattering. Boot-cut jeans are best for pear shaped, or hour glass figures, as the slightly flared hems minimize the wearer’s thighs and balance out a wide hip or behind. Boot-cut jeans are best not worn if you are very slim, as the material will swamp your figure. The best way to wear boot-cuts is with high-heeled boots or stilettos.

Flared Jeans 喇叭牛仔褲
With flared jeans, the flare at the bottom is bigger than that of a boot cut pair, but not as big as bell bottoms (大喇叭牛仔褲). This style generally looks better on taller girls because of the wider flare at the bottom. It gives your legs more dimension and depth, so it doesn’t look like one continuous long line. Very flattering! If you have short legs, it is best to give flares a miss, as the width at the bottom of the legs will make you appear shorter than you actually are. Don’t wear flares if you intend to tuck the bottoms of the legs into your boots, there is far too much material.

Straight-Cut Jeans 直筒牛仔褲
A straight cut is basically straight from top to bottom, with no tapering or flaring at the bottom. You can tuck your jeans into your boots. It’s less stuffing and more comfortable. These jeans look best with boots (tucked in), walking shoes, or flip-flops. However, if you’ve got longer legs, a straight cut might end up looking like you are a giraffe, as it will elongate your legs.

Skinny Jeans 窄管牛仔褲
Skinny jeans have been all the rage recently, but they only really work on a small portion of the population. They are very fitting all the way through, and taper at the bottom. Do wear these if you are tall and slim. They will flatter your figure and show off your long legs to perfection. If you have wider hips and larger thighs, you can still wear skinny jeans, but they will look best with a long sweater, a sweater dress, or a smock top. Don’t wear skinny jeans if you are a little on the large size, as they will show lumps and bumps, and emphasize your size.

Cropped Jeans 七分牛仔褲
Cropped jeans are three-quarter length jeans, suitable for most bodies. You can dress them up with heels and accessories, or dress them down by pairing them with sneakers or flip-flops. These jeans can make your legs look shorter, so petite girls should look for capris that fall just above the knee.

Wide-leg Jeans 寬管牛仔褲
This wide-leg style of jeans looks great on everyone, especially if you are tall. It looks best with heels, as it will make you look tall and lean, and balance the rest of your curves. The best way to wear wide-legs is to wear something tight near the waist, as this is the skinniest part of this style of jeans. A fitted blouse and belt work well, or a top that tapers in at the waist. Wide-legs flatter all but the petite skinny, shorter girls, as the wider pieces swallow you up and make you look even shorter.

Baggy Jeans 垮褲
Baggy jeans, also known as boyfriend jeans, have a tight fit around your butt, but are slightly loose and relaxed at the leg. Their loose and comfy cut makes them look like you have taken them straight out of your boyfriend’s wardrobe. They compliment thicker legs and thighs, and look pretty trendy, either with dainty flats or with sexy high heels. If you want a pair of jeans that gives you freedom, then go for baggy jeans for their extremely comfortable feel.

Low-rise Jeans
低腰牛仔褲
These tight, low-slung, butt-hugging jeans often hit far below the hip. They are very trendy; however, a bit of realism is required here. Do wear low-rise jeans if you are slim with a flat stomach area. Don’t wear them if you have a stomach which peeps out over the top of the waistband, as this is unattractive. It is also best not to wear them with your underwear showing. These are just too sexy and revealing to ever be worn at work. Save them for time outside the office.

With all different cuts and styles of jeans, just ensure that they fit you correctly, so that they look great on you, and that they feel good to wear. One more fashion advice for our CUST readers is that jeans with detailing such as embroidery are best worn with embellishments towards the bottom half of the leg, if you don’t want attention drawn to large hips and thighs. If you want to make your bottom appear smaller, avoid back pockets. If you want your bottom to look bigger, wear great big back pockets. When trying to appear slimmer, you should get jeans that zip up instead of the ones that button up. Lighter washed jeans will emphasize size and shape, whereas darker washes make the wearer appear slimmer. With these tips in mind, now you can pick out the right pair of jeans that not only looks fabulous on you, but gives you an entirely different look!
