For the grammar and writing session this month, I’d like to discuss some difficulties students have in practicing translation. Here is the Chinese sentence once I asked my students to translate: “ 我喜歡的女孩子是站在門口的那位.”The proper translation should be as follows: First let me share with you some of the works my students produced: 1. The girl that one is who stands in front of the door I like. 2. I like the girl is who stands in front of the door that one. 3. The girl, I like who stands in front of the door, is that one. 4. I like the girl is who stands in front of the door.
“The girl I like is the one who stands in front of the door.” or “The girl I like is the one standing in front of the door.” From the above examples written by the students, the following common problems and difficulties students met are found: 1.

Cross-cultural Superstitions
Take one minute and think about if there are any superstitions for basketball and baseball.
Basically, many basketball players believe that the last person to shoot a basket during the warm-up will have a good game. Besides, many people like to wipe the soles of their sneakers and bounce the ball before taking a foul shot for good luck.
For baseball, it is said that many baseball players like to spit into their hand before picking up their bat to bring good luck. Many baseball players also believe that a wad of gum stuck on their hat will bring good luck. However, it is bad luck if a dog walks across the diamond before the first pitch.

Behind the Allure of Saving Cells for Cures By Andrew Pollack from February 18, 2008, the New York Times Part Two
Stem cells in the pulp62 of baby teeth can clearly turn into part of the teeth. But contentions63 that the cells can also form other types of cells, like nerve64 cells, are more controversial65. “There’s never been a demonstration66 that these cells actually form nerve cells that can function67 as nerve cells,” said Pamela Gehron Robey, who headed the lab at the National Institutes of Health, where the baby-teeth stem cells were discovered. Yet the services offering to store baby teeth talk about all the diseases68 that stem cells might treat69 one day. “One day, the Tooth Fairy70 could save your child’s life” is the slogan of BioEden Inc. of Austin, Texas. Dr. Lily Eng, a dentist71 in Lower Manhattan, said she had sent in the last suitable72 tooth from her son Leo, who is now 12. “I heard some mixed reviews about how viable73 this option74 is,” Dr. Eng said. But she added that she had regretted76 not storing the cord75 blood from Leo’s birth, so she decided to try the tooth. “There’s no other option left, and I decided to take it,” she said. Menstrual fluid is the newest service, and the least is known about these cells. In November Cryo-Cell began a service for menstrual blood. One expert, Dr. Camillo Ricordi of the University of Miami, said he had not finished his analysis of the procedure but added that cells did proliferate76 very rapidly. Dr. Ricordi said that he told his two daughters, age 19 and 20, about the service. “They’ve been complaining77 to me that I didn’t save the cord blood when they were born,” he said. “At least this one is not a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity78.”
