pop quiz = surprise test |
midterm |
final |
What’s going to be covered on the test? |
comprehensive test |
cumulative test |
old exam = past exam = previous exam |
make-up test |
e.g. |
A: Are you ready for the math test
tomorrow? |
e.g. |
The final will be a comprehensive
test. |
e.g. |
Will Professor Stevens give us a
cumulative test? |
e.g. |
Do you know where to get the old exam? |
e.g. |
The midterm is around the corner. |
e.g. |
I asked for sick leave yesterday. Can I take the make-up today?
cheat on the test/exam |
crib notes |
forge the exam |
copy someone’s homework |
turn in the test = hand in the test |
return the test |
e.g. |
He got away with cheating on
the test?! He gets away with murder! |
e.g. |
The teacher finally saw him cheating
on the test. I knew he would get busted sooner or later. |
e.g. |
In the exam, the guy next to me
cribbed my answers word for word. |
e.g. |
Never be an imposter (=
forger) in the exam. Once caught, he or she will be kicked out of
school (= forced dismissal). |
e.g. |
He often copies your
homework. Why are you willing to give him a free ride? |
e.g. |
The professor will return the tests
today. |
Q3.
knuckle down = buckle down = study hard = hit the books = bone up = study one’s butts off |
cram for a test |
pull an all-nighter = burn the midnight oil |
e.g. |
Hey! Buddy. We’ve got to knuckle
down for a while if we want to pass the finals. |
e.g. |
I need to bone up on my
economics. |
e.g. |
We have fooled around for a
long time and now we have to cram for the exams next Monday. |
e.g. |
Pulling an all nighter
makes me rather pooped the next day. |
e.g. |
I have a big test tomorrow, so I
plan to burn the midnight oil
tonight. |
Q4.
What’s your score? = Did you do well on the test? |
squeak by |
ace a test = pass a test with flying colors = get full marks on a test |
get a big fat zero on a test |
blow a test = bomb a test |
curve the grade |
“Did you do well on the test?”
或是
“Do you mind telling me your score?”
75 on the test.” 或是 “I didn’t score high on that test.”
(我考80幾分) 或是 “I got something around
the average.”
I bombed the test.”
e.g. |
Jack is not big on biology.
So he just wants to squeak by. |
e.g. |
Jack is a borderline student,
but his IQ is pretty high. He’s just a lazy bone. |
e.g. |
My younger brother got a big fat
zero on the test. |
e.g. |
You’re really going to freak out
when I tell you who aced the test. |
e.g. |
My parents are going to flip out
if I blow this test. |
e.g. |
We did really bad on the final. But
don’t worry; the instructor will be curving the grades. |

For the grammar and writing session this month, let’s take a look at the following sentence, which appears in one of the reading comprehension exercises in the GEPT- elementary simulation test: “The noise made by many ships crossing the ocean has made hearing long-distance whale-songs almost impossible.” For the students whose English proficiency is barely equal to that of the 8th graders, this sentence, a complex one containing two short clauses with their conjunctions omitted, is somehow hard for them to understand, if it is not read more than twice. Therefore, I’d like to take this chance to explain the sentence from grammatical point of view and hope the analysis would be of help to students in increasing their reading skills. 1. 本句主詞是The noise, 動詞是has made 2. The noise that is made by,文法上that和is都可省略, 只留下過去分詞made表noise是被動就可以; 第二個是現在分詞crossing修飾ships, …ships crossing原本為ships that cross the oceans. 3. to make something impossible意思是使某事不可能.

Hot News: What happened to China’s
schools? The earthquake struck during the school day—2:28 p.m. on a Monday. As the ground shook, buildings began to collapse in towns across China's Sichuan Province. Some of the worst damaged was in the schools. Nearly 7,000 classrooms crumbled into heaps of rubble during the violent shaking. Tens of thousands of students were inside those classrooms when the quake began. Some were able to escape or claw their way out of the wreckage. Hundreds of other students didn't make it. They are now among China's more than 60,000 victims of the May 12 earthquake. Reporters for National Public Radio talked with heart-broken parents whose children were buried when the Fuxing primary school collapsed. Many wanted to know why so many schools collapsed when other buildings, including government buildings, remained standing through the 7.9-magnitude quake. Were the schools poorly built, leaving the children to suffer the consequences, they asked? The Chinese government has promised to hold builders responsible for any shoddy construction. Right now, China's focus is on the immediate crisis: Finding the victims, and feeding and housing the millions of now-homeless people. More than 60,000 people died in the earthquake, and about 25,000 others are missing and feared dead, according to China's State Council. An estimated 5 million people lost their homes in the earthquake. Many of those survivors are now living in tent cities and wondering how they'll rebuild their lives.
What goes around comes around!
His name was Fleming, and he was a poor Scottish farmer. One day, while trying to make a living for his family, he heard a cry for help coming from a nearby bog (沼澤). He dropped his tools and ran to the bog. There, mired to his waist in black muck (淤泥), was a terrified boy, screaming and struggling to free himself. Farmer Fleming saved the lad (小伙子) from what could have been a slow and terrifying death.
The next day, a fancy carriage (四輪馬車) pulled up to the Scotsman's sparse (稀疏的) surroundings. An elegantly dressed nobleman stepped out and introduced himself as the father of the boy Farmer Fleming had saved.
"I want to repay you," said the nobleman. "You saved my son's life."
"No, I can't accept payment for what I did," the Scottish farmer replied, waving off the offer.
At that moment, the farmer's own son came to the door of the family hovel.
"Is that your son?" the nobleman asked.
"Yes," the farmer replied proudly.
"I'll make you a deal. Let me take him and give him a good education. If the lad is anything like his father, he'll grow to a man you can be proud of."
And that he did. In time, Farmer Fleming's son graduated from St. Mary's Hospital Medical School in London, and went on to become known throughout the world as the noted Sir Alexander Fleming, the discoverer of Penicillin
Years afterward, the nobleman's son was stricken with pneumonia. What saved him? Penicillin.
The name of the nobleman? Lord Randolph Churchill. His son's name? Sir Winston Churchill.
Someone once said: What goes around comes around.
